The Food & Farming Transition: Toward a Post Carbon Food System – Books for Agriculture
Heinberg, Richard and Bomford, Michael
Post Carbon Institute 2009 Dewey Dec. 630
Conclusion: The American food system rests on an unstable foundation of massive fossil fuel inputs. It must be reinvented in the face of declining fuel stocks. The new food system will use less energy, and the energy it uses will come from renewable sources. We can begin the transition to the new system immediately through a process of planned, graduated, rapid change. The unplanned alternative – reconstruction from scratch after collapse – would be chaotic and tragic.

In cantankerous opinions, hard-headed advice, and free-swinging sketches of real farmers, Bryan Jones addresses everyone who feels the pull of the land. He accepts the emotional appeal of “going back to the land” and then takes the unconventional stand that, above all, farming can be a good way to make money. Against the grain of public policy that, he maintains, encourages big agriculture, Jones works out how a shrewd, stubborn small farmer can still make a go of it.
The heart of the book is the primer for novices–and for city folk who dream of farming. Jones emphasizes the practicalities of farm finance and recommends sidelines for the beginner–welding, giving guitar lessons, keeping the books for a local elevator–as an alternative to starving. He urges newcomers to start small and to be sure that farming is something they really want to do. To interested bystanders, The Farming Game offers one farmer’s audacious, stimulating, and entertaining view of American agriculture today.
North Point 2000 Dewey Dec. 338.1
Food’s Frontier provides a survey of pioneering agricultural research projects underway in Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, Uganda, India, China, Chile, Brazil, Mexico, and Peru by a writer both well-grounded technically and sensitive to social and cultural issues. The book starts from the premise that the “Green Revolution” which averted mass starvation a generation ago is not a long-term solution to global food needs and has created its own very serious problems.
Solutions to these problems are coming from a reexamination of ancient methods of agriculture that have allowed small-scale productivity over many generations. Research in the developing world, based on alternative methods and philosophies, indigenous knowledge, and native crops, joined with cutting edge technology, offer hope for a more lasting solution to the world’s increasing food needs.

Mazoyer, Marcel and Roudart, Laurence
Earthscan 2006 Dewey Dec. 630
Only once we understand the long history of human efforts to draw sustenance from the land can we grasp the nature of the crisis that faces humankind today, as hundreds of millions of people are faced with famine or flight from the land. From Neolithic times through the earliest civilizations of the ancient Near East, in savannahs, river valleys and the terraces created by the Incas in the Andean mountains, an increasing range of agricultural techniques have developed in response to very different conditions. These developments are recounted in this book, with detailed attention to the ways in which plants, animals, soil, climate, and society have interacted.
During the twentieth century, mechanization, motorization and specialization have brought to a halt the pattern of cultural and environmental responses that characterized the global history of agriculture until then. Today a small number of corporations have the capacity to impose the farming methods on the planet that they find most profitable. Mazoyer and Roudart propose an alternative global strategy that can safeguard the economies of the poor countries, reinvigorate the global economy, and create a livable future for mankind.

Addresses important issues by examining topics of global agriculture and food systems that are key to understanding the challenges we face. Questions it addresses include:
Will we be able to produce enough food to meet the increasing dietary needs and wants of the additional two billion people expected to inhabit our planet by 2050? Will we be able to meet the need for so much more food while simultaneously reducing adverse environmental effects of today’s agriculture practices? Will we be able to produce the additional food using less land and water than we use now?
These are among the most important challenges that face our planet in the coming decades. The broad themes of food systems and people, agriculture and the environment, the science of agriculture, agricultural products, and agricultural production systems are covered in more than 200 separate chapters of this work. The book provides information that serves as the foundation for discussion of the food and environment challenges of the world. An international group of highly respected authors addresses these issues from a global perspective and provides the background, references, and linkages for further exploration of each of topics of this comprehensive work.
Westfall, Patricia Tichenor
Avon 1991 Dewey Dec. 630
Farm life as a series of experiences that lead to self-understanding and fresh perceptions. Agrarian innocents, West fall (Journalism/Ohio Univ.) and her husband acquired a house and 20 fallow acres not far from the Univ. of Iowa, where husband Mark was working toward a Ph.D. and teaching. He envisioned establishing a kind of Whole Earth Catalogue farming existence. She thought a few chickens might do. Before long, they not only had chickens laying six to eight eggs daily, but there were three goats for milk and two geese as “watchdogs” against foxes and other intruders. The house was tom apart to install a wood-burning stove, 2000 saplings were planted to provide a cash crop 30 years hence, and Mark talked of a greenhouse for solar heat and a rainwater collection system. The marriage foundered, however, after Westfall realized that while Mark wanted to become a “living myth” with all the answers, she wanted to experience the farm for its sights, sounds, smells, and changing moods.
Replete with much ecological and agrarian lore: an evocative excursion into a questing mind that loves the quest but not its resolution. Free books about farm life.

Adventures in Conservation with Franklin D. Roosevelt – Books for Forestry
Northland 1989 Dewey Dec. 973.91
Possibly Franklin Roosevelt’s best-known legacy in conservation was his executive order proclaiming the Jackson Hole National Monument in Wyomingthis in the middle of WW II. But he was directly involved in other projects: Olympia (Wash.) and Kings Canyon (Calif.) National Parks, the Carl Inn Sugar Pines (Calif.) as well as measures for wildlife protection. The late Brandt was himself a crusader, tireless lobbyist and major figure in conservation circles who also wrote speeches and plotted strategy for FDR and Secretary of the Interior Harold Ickes in their fight to expand and create national parks. Brandt here portrays a president who was accessible to his staff and committed to conserving natural resources; the bitter wrangling between the Park and Forestry Services and the implacable opposition (and dirty tricks) by Western lumber and power interests.
