Audels Answers on Automobiles for Owners, Operators, Repairmen, relating to the parts, operation, care, management, road driving
Audel, Theodore
Audel 1912
As autos became more affordable in the early 20th century, the number of auto owners grew rapidly. Autos were, by the engineering standards of that time, very complex machines. This 1912 book attempted to introduce the general public to automotive technology, and teach them the skills they would need to drive vehicles and to meet the intensive maintenance requirements.

A practical handbook on the care, repair and management of motor trucks and automobiles for owners, chauffeurs, garagemen and schools
Fraser, Edward S. and Jones, Ralph B.
Van Nostrand 1921
This 1921 book explains in detail how the various components of motor vehicles worked, assisted by 278 illustrations. It was probably too technical for the average driver, but very informative for aspiring auto mechanics. It goes beyond purely generic descriptions, and covers the different designs used by leading manufacturers. Now the book serves as a useful description of the state of automotive technology about 1920.
The Practical Design of Motor Cars
Gunn, James
Longmans 1910
The author of this 1910 British book was an instructor in a technical college in the then-new field of motor vehicle engineering. This book was intended for technical students. Now it serves mainly to show the state of automotive technology in 1910, and the engineering challenges confronting the industry.

There are separate chapters for steam, electric, and compressed air vehicles, (besides vehicles with “explosive motors”), because cars were being built with all these technologies at that time. Over 300 illustrations. An appendix contains a list of about 200 companies producing autos in the U.S. in the late 1890s. Automotive books pdf.
Service Station Management; Its Principles and Practice

Jones, Charles L.
Van Nostrand 1922
Published in 1922. “The author tells how to lay out and equip service stations and how to manage and build up the business but is not concerned with methods of performing repair jobs. He writes from nine years’ experience with the Ford motor company, service department, and the examples given in the book mainly refer to Ford service stations, although the underlying principles may be used by dealers and service stations handling other makes of cars.” – A.L.A. Catalog (1926).

Page, Victor Wilfred
Henley 1917
“There is only one make of motor vehicle in the world that is sold in large enough quantities to warrant the publication of a special treatise on its repair and maintenance and that is the Ford Model T. With the close of the 1916 season’s business there will be at least 1,000,000 Ford cars of al types in use …” – Preface.
Photo-Auto Maps: New York to Chicago; Albany to Saratoga Springs; Toledo to Detroit; South Bend to Indianapolis
Rand McNally
Rand McNally 1907
One problem faced by auto owners in the early 1900s was navigating in unfamiliar country with a scarcity of street signs. The photos also show a second problem facing drivers; the condition of roads.
Automobile Troubles and How to Remedy Them
A practical book for the automobile owner, operator, dealer, builder, salesman, experimenter and student of mechanical achievements
Root, Charles P.
Thompson 1911
Early auto owners were faced with a heavy maintenance and repair burden. As so much of the technology was new and unfamiliar to almost everyone, many of the issues would have baffled their owners. This 1911 book is different from other repair books on this web page in that it doesn’t try to be an introduction to automotive technology. It was meant to be a reference book to be consulted for repairs, rather than a textbook about automotive design. It focuses on symptoms of automotive ‘troubles’ and their causes. Quite detailed at times, but not very technical. Auto industry in the U.S.
